  • Access

The two-node Cerebras CS-3 system can only be accessed from within the HSU network. If you are not located at the HSU, you will need to connect using the HSU VPN (see below). To be able to access the Cerebas Systems, you need to be a registered HPC user.

Access

Note that the system is available for members of HSU only. Please apply for HPC systems access using the following form (available on campus/VPN only, login with RZ credentials), if needed.

There are two Login Nodes for the Cerebras System:

  • cerebras-login01.hsu-hh.de
  • cerebras-login02.hsu-hh.de

Please note: Each login node uses its own local storage. You can access HSUper’s storage systems on the login nodes to share data. Your home directory on the Cerebras Login Nodes is meant to be used like local scratch. All data for jobs must be stored in the CEPH file system (e.g. /ceph/scratch/cerebras).

Access to Cerebras Login Nodes using Linux / Windows 10+ / MacOS 10+

Login using your RZ credentials. Open a terminal / command prompt and enter, replacing with your RZ name:

ssh <rz-name>@cerebras-login01.hsu-hh.de

Please note: Only users that were authorized to utilize HPC computing resources are able to login.

Access to Cerebras Login Nodes using your public SSH key

Instead of entering every time your password, you may set up logging in using SSH keys.

  • If you already have created SSH keys, you may add your public key to the ~/.ssh/authorized_keys file on the Cerebras Login Nodes using your favourite text editor.
  • Connect to a Cerebras Login Node with your private key:

ssh -i ~/path/to/private/key <rz-name>@cerebras-login01.hsu-hh.de

  • Note: You may skip the key parameter if you have only one SSH key stored in your ~/.ssh/ folder as it then gets transmitted automatically.

If you need to create new SSH keys, use the type “Ed25519” as it is currently seen as the fastest and most secure type. If you work from a terminal / command prompt, you may create a key using: ssh-keygen -t ed25519 Follow the instructions and remember where the public and private key are saved. Default values are fine.

Installing and Configuring the HSU VPN Client (eduVPN)

Step 1: Install the eduVPN Client

Download and install the eduVPN client on your device.

Step 2: Connect to HSU’s Virtual Private Network (VPN)

  1. Launch the eduVPN client and search for “HSU” in the search bar. If the search bar is not visible, click the “+” button to access it.
  2. Select “Institute Access” and then choose “Helmut Schmidt University” from the list of available institutions.
  3. Complete the registration process by:
  • Selecting the “HSU-Members” button
  • Authenticating with Microsoft’s authentication service using general HSU login details
  • Confirming data transmission, if prompted
  • Confirm registration for the eduVPN client by clicking the corresponding button

Step 3: Connect to the HSU VPN Profile

After completing the registration process:

  1. Return manually to the eduVPN client, which should now display “Helmut Schmidt University” as an Institute Access option.
  2. Select one of the available VPN profiles to establish a secure connection to the university’s network.
