The HPC Portal provides educational content for you to learn about your first steps on HSUper. Feel free to explore our training media.

First Steps

To help new users get started with HSUper, we provide a range of educational materials designed to support independent learning and foster essential skills for high performance computing.

We strongly recommend completing our training units as a starting point. These structured courses are tailored to introduce key concepts and guide you step-by-step in effectively using the HSUper system.

Basic Concepts

Currently, there are three digital workshops avaivable. These trainings are part of the reimagined HSUper Workshops series, originally offered as a six-part on-site program. Now presented as flexible, self-paced digital trainings, these workshops are designed to empower HSUper users to independently develop the competencies needed to make the most of HPC resources.

HPC Workshop 1 - A short introduction to HSUper and the Linux Terminal

This workshop introduces you to two critical aspects of HPC: managing software environments with module systems and efficiently submitting and managing tasks using the Slurm workload manager.

Learning Goals

  • You will learn what prerequisities you need to use the HPC structure at the HSU in general and how to access the HSUper. Therefore you will learn how to navigate via Command Line Interface (CLI)

  • After getting access to HSUper, you will learn how to work with text files. You will learn how to display, create and delete files. In this course you will find a task to apply your new knowledge and simulate your problem solving skills.

  • To organize directories, you will learn how to create, delete and change directories. The last task is about scripts and environments variables.

HPC Workshop 2 - Data Transfer and System Resources

This workshop builds on the foundations established in Workshop 1 and focuses on essential skills for effectively managing data and understanding system resources.

Learning Goals

  • You will learn how to transfer data to and from HSUper.

  • After learning about data transfer, you will learn how to get all the information you need to manage your tasks. That includes information about the storage system, obtaining hardware information and information about nodes and partitions.

  • Last but not least, you will learn how to understand current cluster utilization. That will help you to manage your workloads effectively and plan your future resource needs.

HPC Workshop 3 - Module Systems and Slurm Jobs

This workshop introduces you to two critical aspects of HPC: managing software environments with module systems and efficiently submitting and managing tasks using the Slurm workload manager.

Learning Goals

  • In this course you will learn how to understand module Systems and practice how to list, load and unload software modules.

  • After that, you will practice to allocate compute nodes interactively.

  • Last but not least, you will learn how to understand current cluster utilization. That will help you to manage your workloads effectively and plan your future resource needs.
